6 Ways to Live a Healthier, Happier Year

So it's the start of a new year, the time when a lot of people reflect about the past year and talk about changes they'd like to make this year. A lot of resolutions that get thrown about are the ones to eat healthier and to exercise more and whilst these are really good resolutions to have I'd like to talk about a few less obvious ways that could make your year a bit better.



  1. Be Mindful
    Yes it's a word used a lot these days but do people actually take notice and do things mindfully? When you're drinking a cup of tea in the morning are you just thinking about the smell, the taste and the warmth of that tea and the feel of the cup that it's in or are you worrying about something that happened yesterday? Worrying about something you can't change? If you start to make little changes in your routine, so for example being more mindful whilst brushing your teeth, getting dressed or when you're out with friends. You'll become more aware of what's happening in the moment and you'll begin to see a change.
    So I guess you're now thinking "why do I need to do these things?" or "why do I need to become more mindful?" Well, I can tell you in one simple way - to make your life more meaningful, to appreciate people and experiences more and to understand why life is worth living. This is why it's perfect for those with negative tendencies, it helps you begin to see and appreciate the little things in life, the little things that are actually the big things.
  2. Put Yourself First
    This is something I've learnt over the past year, to put yourself first is one of the most important things to do (within reason, of course.) The word selfish has many negative connotations but, to be selfish can simply mean to put what you need before anything and anyone else, after all you're the most important person in your life as it is indeed your life, no one elses. Maybe you're having difficulties and you need some time and space to do your own thing, to work things out, Maybe you're just tired and can't be bothered to go out with that friend. Maybe you're suffering from a mental or physical illness and you need to put effort into recovering - and you know what? That's okay. It's okay to put what you need and what you'd like first. Your health and happiness is essential to living a good life.
  3. Make the most of time with your loved ones
    I know in some ways I'm slightly contradicting my last point but you'll understand where I'm coming from. Christmas has just been, did you take time to appreciate the love and kindness you received from those people around you. It's important to appreciate your time spent with family and friends and to completely give your time to being there with them. This then brings me rather nicely on to my next point.
  4. Spend less time on social media
    To be honest, yes I'm a blogger and I do post from time to time but I'm not one for being on social media on my phone or laptop for hours on end. You're out with a friend and they're constantly on their phone - annoying right? What fun is there in that? Or maybe you're the person who's on the phone all the time? Put the phone down and be with that person and that person only. You'll begin to have more quality time with that person and actually get to know them more and have conversations about things that actually matter. Maybe you're bored and don't know what to do so you go onto twitter, Facebook, Instagram or Snapchat? Yes I'm all for connecting with people, but get off the phone and go meet them, go talk to someone in person instead of liking or commenting on their posts or pictures. Talk to them face to face, compliment people face to face. That's when you begin to actually get to know someone, understand them and appreciate them. Get off that phone, go out there and live... preferably after you've finished reading my post...
  5. Do What Makes You Happy
    If you're stuck in a job you don't like then look for a new one. If you have ambitions and dreams you wish to fulfill go and chase them, make them happen. You've always wanted to do something, go do it. No one is stopping you from being happy apart from yourself. You go out and do what you want to do, do what makes you happy and don't let anyone stop you. You can change things. You can live your life the way you want to.
  6.  Relax
    Have down time. Put on your pjs and read a book. Take a bath. Put on comfy fluffy socks and go get a hot chocolate. You take care of yourself. Do things to be kind to yourself and your body regularly. Treat yourself with compassion. Then begin to see how these self-nurturing habits affect your mind, body and spirit.

  1. I really like these ideas! I've never really spent a lot of time thinking about considering mindfulness even though it's a term that has been used a lot recently. It's definitely something I want to look into and educate myself about more!
